Senior Subawards Specialist

JOB SUMMARY

The Office of the Vice President for Research, Sponsored Program Services (SPS) at the University of Connecticut (UConn) is seeking a dedicated Senior Subaward Specialist to manage, administer, and monitor the University’s subaward-sponsored research portfolio.

This position will be hired either at the Grants & Contracts Specialist classification (Subaward Specialist) or the Senior Grants & Contracts Specialist classification (Senior Subaward Specialist) dependent upon the incumbent’s experience, skills, abilities, and training as determined by the University. The Subaward Specialist works under direction and are given the latitude to make decisions on projects that they are accountable for delivering on. The Senior Subaward Specialist works under direction and has the latitude to make daily operational decisions driven by departmental policies and procedures.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Under the direction of the Associate Director Pre-Award and Federal Contracting, the Subaward Specialist/Senior Subaward Specialist will be responsible for administration of outgoing subaward agreements in accordance with the appropriate federal, state and institutional regulatory requirements.
• Serves as the primary point of contact with internal and external parties, consulting with faculty, SPS staff, and departmental administrative personnel regarding subaward-related issues.
• The Subaward Specialist/Senior Subaward Specialist is responsible for review of subaward proposal materials, subrecipient entity information, and supplemental documentation such as audit reports; assessment of the risk of entering into the subaward; and drafting the agreement to a subrecipient partner, including the mitigation of any identified risk.
• Interfaces and represents UConn routinely with subrecipients.
• Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Subaward Specialist (Grants & Contracts Specialist/P4):

1. Bachelor’s degree in a related field and four years of related experience in sponsored programs and the administration of grants, contracts, subcontracts, and other agreement types; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Senior Subaward Specialist (Senior Grants & Contracts Specialist/P5):

1. Bachelor’s degree and at least six years of experience in sponsored programs, including the negotiation of grants, contracts, subcontracts, and other agreement types; OR Master’s degree and at least four years of experience in sponsored programs, including the negotiation of grants, contracts, subcontracts, and other agreement types. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the degree and years requirement.
2. Ability to research and assist with the resolution of highly complex issues with legal, fiscal, and ethical/compliance implications.  

Both Levels:

1. Demonstrated ability to network and build consensus with internal and external stakeholders.
2. Ability to properly escalate and assist with the resolution of highly complex issues with legal, fiscal and ethical/compliance implications.
3. Superior oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and serve as a liaison between sponsors, all levels of University administration, and principal investigators.
4. Customer service orientation, with the ability to clearly communicate contractual concerns and issues. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION

1. Experience working in an institution of higher education.
2. Experience working in a high-volume, high-production, and/or sponsored-research-intensive environment. Experience with material transfer agreements, non-disclosure and confidentiality agreements, service agreements, and research agreements. 
3. Familiarity with granting agencies (government, international, private, industry, etc.).
4. Experience with a wide variety of FDP Contracting templates.
