Grants Accountant - Full Time - Exempt

Department: Planning

Reports to: Comprehensive Planning Director

Tribal Preference will be given in accordance with BRBRR Act Relating to Employment.

POSITION SUMMARY:  The Grants Accountant is expected to independently perform the full range of accounting/auditing duties in relation to grants and government contracts. The Grants Accountant will build and maintain knowledge of Federal compliance regulations and grant-funding Best Practices. Successful performance requires a knowledge of governmental accounting procedures and reporting requirements, the ability to exercise sound independent judgment within established guidelines and a skill in training others.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Reviews accounting documents to ensure accuracy of information and calculations and make correcting entries as required.
  • Examines supporting documentation to establish proper authorization and conformance with federal regulations.
  • Prepares and maintains control and subsidiary accounting records involving a variety of transactions and accounts.
  • Prepares trial balances and financial reports; coordinates and calculates month-end and year-end closings in regards to grant accounts.
  • Prepares journal entries and periodic reconciliations of general ledger, journal, subsidiary accounts and bank statements.
  • Maintains expenditure and budgetary control accounts.
  • Compiles and prepares grants financial statements, general and subsidiary ledgers and supporting schedules.
  • Provides grant accounting and prepares financial reports for various government agencies.
  • Enters and reviews grant budgets in the Accounting system; coordinates and reviews fund accounting maintenance.
  • Audits grant financial records to ensure compliance with grant award documents and guidelines.
  • Performs and conducts special grants accounting studies or projects.
  • Provides technical support to outside auditors.
  • Reviews entries and accounting documents for grants compliance, makes corrections
  • Coordinates with Program Coordinators and the Grants Office in maintaining compliance of grants
  • Imports financial data into the Tribes grants management system, ensuring accuracy of records
  • Other financial grant duties may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Principles, practices and terminology of general, fund and government auditing, accounting and budgeting.
  • Principles and practices of business data processing, particularly as related to the processing of accounting information.
  • Applicable laws regulating public fiscal operations, especially in relation to grants.
  • Budgeting principles and terminology.
  • Basic auditing and reconciliation principles and methods.
  • Analyzing, balancing, reviewing, interpreting and reconciling financial reports and transactions.
  • Verifying the accuracy of financial data and information.
  • Ensuring proper authorization and documentation for disbursements and other transactions.
  • Preparing clear, concise and complete financial reports and statements as well as audit reports and audit work papers.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Must have High School diploma or GED
  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in: Business Administration with an emphasis in accounting;
  • OR; equivalent combination of education and experience (Equivalent = two (2) year’s direct experience to one (1) year of education).
  • Must have     1   /years of grant related accounting experience 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Must be able to pass criminal background/fingerprint check and be bondable.
  • Must be able to obtain/maintain required trainings and certifications
